Comment on An Honest Review of Math Lessons for A Living Education by Angela Schaefer https://www.thesimplehomeschooler.com/review-math-lessons-for-a-living-education/#comment-16574 https://www.thesimplehomeschooler.com/?p=5902#comment-16574 I am 52 years old and even though. I graduated from high school. In 1991 I have dyscaulia so my math skills. Are not very good. So embarrassing that the homeschooled math student is me. This looks good but I don’t think it would have enough practice for me. So far I narrowed my choices down. To Rod and Staff. Along with Math U See. I tell myself that since I have one granddaughter that is 4 years old. My second granddaughter will be here in November. That the blocks will get used again. I need something more than teachers manual. To explain the lessons too me. Thank you for your reviews.

Comment on The Cautionary Tale of a Homeschool Mom who Tried to Quit Coffee by Kimberly https://www.thesimplehomeschooler.com/the-cautionary-tale-of-a-homeschool-mom-who-tried-to-quit-coffee/#comment-15782 http://www.thesimplehomeschooler.com/?p=961#comment-15782 This is my favorite and most relatable blog post ever. I’ve also been through the cycle of trying to quit coffee and regretting it immensely. A few times, actually. You’d think I would learn!
Honestly I often feel that if I can’t do this without the prop of caffeine, then maybe I shouldn’t be doing it. That I should be able to get enough sleep and eat well enough to do this coffee-free.
But as it stands, my reality requires coffee, and like you, I’ll revisit that issue in 15 years! Putting a date on something that needs doing always makes me feel better about it anyways.

Comment on Life of Fred Review: Is it Enough? by Meredith https://www.thesimplehomeschooler.com/life-of-fred-review/comment-page-2/#comment-15755 https://www.thesimplehomeschooler.com/?p=5800#comment-15755 Thanks for sharing this review! It gave me some things to think about. We just used LOF for the first time this past year, and I read A-E with my daughter, who just finished 2nd grade (some with my son who just finished K, when he decided to sit in). I used it them to supplement Math-U-See. I did not have a great relationship with math growing up, and even though I always got As (including in college) I never felt like I understood the concepts well, and I never enjoyed the process. I have worked pretty hard to build a love, or in the least an appreciation, for math with my kids. It helps that we have a lot of friends and a couple of family members who studied math. We also read math storybooks, and picture books about mathematicians, etc. All that to say, the reason I picked up LOF in the first place is because I heard from several people that it was a fun way to introduce concepts and give the WHY behind math. And I feel LOF has met that expectation.

Both of my kids LOVE Life of Fred and often asked for it. Obviously, every kid is different, but interestingly enough, I found the non math questions to be helpful for my son. He was not confident in his abilities, so getting an “easy” question kind of helped him get going. They also loved seeing the preview of more advanced questions (especially my daughter, who is very interested in math)… Real quote from yesterday, aka middle of the summer, “I can’t wait until it’s time to study Algebra and Calculus. Can I have the Life of Fred Calculus book?” She also wrote a letter to Steve Demme, the author of Math-U-See… so maybe she is not the typical example lol. HOWEVER my son might be.

Back to the review. I used the food comments as a jumping off point for “you are going to hear a lot of things like this out in the world, but actually…” etc. Just an idea. When we didn’t quite get to the last few lessons of my daughter’s Math-U-See Beta book, I just gave her the final test to see how she faired. She could do all of the “new” concepts because, as she reminded me, she had learned some of them in LOF (which I had forgotten about). As a relatively new LOF user, I wouldn’t feel comfortable making it the complete curriculum, but I am also buying up more books when I find them used, and I have already planned to read 3 stories per week for our upcoming year.
